Think Pink! Shop for the cause

The month of October is in full swing and unless you have been living under a rock, you probably have noticed the considerable amount of pink that is so prevalent during the month.   Well, whether or not you have been tickled pink, there are a number of ways you can show your support for an increase in breast cancer awareness and research this month .

Here are a few statistics about the disease:
  • Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among women (skin cancer is the only other form of cancer that is equally as prevalent)
  • There is almost a 100% 5 year survival rate for women who are diagnosed in the very early stages
  • Self examination is an important factor in prevention.  NOTE: it is key to know what is “normal” for you. Many women have lumpy breasts as the result of hormonal changes; also women with smaller breasts or who are thin may have more lumps so it is important to know what is normal versus what may be cause for concern
  • The general rule of thumb is that most women should have their first mammogram at the age of 40.  The exception to this is women who have had a family history may want to consider having one a bit earlier
